The Interview Airs on Noticiero Telemundo Today at 6:30 p.m. ET/PT, 5:30 p.m. CT
MIAMI – January 26, 2012 – Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney blamed President Obama for the high unemployment rates among Hispanics in an Telemundo interview that airs today Thursday, January 26th at 6:30 p.m. ET/PT, 5:30 p.m CT.
“I think that the people in the Hispanic community, people throughout this country that are in entry-level positions, fighting their way into the U.S. economy, have been those that are the most badly hurt by the Obama economy. He didn’t cause the recession, but he made it worse. And he has been very ineffective in trying to rebuild our economy. He’s made the recovery the slowest since Hoover, since the 1930′s. We need a president who understands how business works,” said Governor Romney.
The Republican presidential candidate also confirmed that he would veto the Dream Act. “Its current form as I understand it says that people who are going to school here for a period of time would become legal residents. That’s not an exemption I would make. I would, however, make an exemption relating to military service. And that’s the place where I think we would focus,” said Romney.
During the interview with Telemundo, Governor Romney proposed the development of an I.D. verification system for legal immigrants seeking work. “The idea is that people who come here legally would have identification that they’re here legally, and employers would check that identification through an e-verify system. People who are not here legally would not have those kinds of documents and would increasingly find it difficult to find work here. And if that’s the case, people will tend in those circumstances to go to places where they can find work, which would be back in their homes,” said Romney.
When asked about his current prospects in the Florida race, Governor Romney said that “It’s very possible that Florida will be the deciding state. Someone can come out of Florida with a lot of momentum and then go on for the rest of the race. So Florida has a lot to say about who our nominee will be. I can’t tell you whether it’s ‘make it or break it’, but clearly Florida makes a big difference in the process.”
The interview, that includes comments on immigration, Latin America, the economy and the campaign, airs this afternoon on Noticiero Telemundo.
In addition to this interview with Governor Romney, this past week Telemundo has interviewed Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum and US Senator for Florida Marco Rubio.
